Key facts about IME

The IRCC Immigration Medical Exam (IME) is an essential step in the application process, and understanding its key aspects is vital for a smooth and successful immigration journey.

Purpose of the IME

The primary purpose of the IME is to assess the health status of applicants. By evaluating an applicant’s health, IRCCcan make informed decisions regarding their admissibility. The IME ensures that individuals entering Canada do not introduce or spread communicable diseases, place excessive demands on the healthcare system, or pose health-related risks to the Canadian population.

Authorized Panel Physicians

The IME must be conducted by a designated panel physician approved by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). These panel physicians are authorized to perform the medical examination and provide the necessary documentation for visa applications. The test cannot be performed by your family physician, unless that individual has been authorized by IRCC.

Who needs to take the IME

In general, most applicants for Canadian permanent residency, including refugees and certain temporary residents, are required to undergo the IME. However, there are some exceptions based on factors such as age, duration of stay, and the type of visa being applied for. It is essential to check the specific requirements based on individual circumstances and visa categories.

Exemptions

Some low-risk foreign nationals already in Canada may be exempt from submitting a new IME if they meet specific criteria. These temporary public policies are designed to streamline application processing and benefit eligible applicants, reducing the need for additional medical examinations. Consult IRCC website for current policies.

Validity period

IME results are valid for 12 months. Applicants must submit visa application within this period. If the application process exceeds this timeframe, they may need to undergo a new IME if the previous one expires. Timely submission is crucial to avoid the need for additional medical examinations and potential delays in the application process.

Application processing

Delays in completing the IME or medical conditions that require further evaluation can significantly extend processing times. Therefore, it is essential for applicants to schedule and complete their IME promptly. Timely action ensures smoother processing and reduces the risk of unnecessary delays, helping them avoid potential setbacks.

Exam process

What to expect

We understand the importance of the IRCC medical exam. As such, we’ve designed our process to be efficient and straightforward, helping you move one step closer to your Canadian immigration goals.

    Medical history

The panel physician will conduct a thorough review of the individual's medical history. This includes asking questions about any past or current illnesses, chronic conditions, surgeries, and hospitalizations. The physician will also inquire about any medications the individual is currently taking, as well as any known allergies or ongoing treatments. In some cases, the physician may request additional information or documentation regarding previous medical conditions to ensure a comprehensive assessment.
  • Physical examination

The panel physician will conduct a comprehensive physical examination including measuring your height and weight to check for any significant abnormalities, monitoring your blood pressure, and evaluating the condition of your heart and lungs. The physician will also examine your sensory organs, including your eyes, ears, nose, and throat, to detect any potential issues. This thorough physical exam helps identify any medical conditions that could impact your admissibility to Canada.
  • Laboratory tests

The panel physician may require blood and urine tests to screen for various infectious diseases, such as HIV, syphilis, and other conditions that could impact public health. These tests are crucial for identifying any underlying medical issues that may not be immediately visible during the physical examination. In addition to infectious diseases, the tests may also detect chronic conditions like diabetes or kidney problems. By conducting these screenings, the physician ensures that all health concerns are properly addressed and reported to IRCC in accordance with their guidelines.
  • Chest X-ray

A chest X-ray is required for applicants aged 11 and above to screen for tuberculosis (TB). This diagnostic test is crucial for identifying active TB, which poses a significant public health risk. The X-ray is performed at our facility, and the results are reviewed by the panel physician to ensure compliance with immigration health standards.
  • Document findings

The panel physician will meticulously document all findings from the medical history review, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. This includes completing IRCC-required forms with detailed notes on any discovered medical conditions and providing recommendations for further evaluation if needed. Accurate documentation is crucial for the integrity of the immigration process.
  • Results review

After the examination, the physician will inform you about the next steps. This may include instructions for any required follow-up examinations or additional tests. The physician will also explains how the results of the IME will be submitted to IRCC, ensuring that the you understands the process and any potential impacts on you immigration application.
  • eMedical submission

We require up to two days to submit the medical report and test results to IRCC through the eMedical system. This secure, electronic submission ensures that IRCC receives accurate and timely information. If any communicable diseases are identified, the physician is also responsible for reporting these findings to public health authorities, ensuring the safety of the broader community.

Throughout the exam, our focus is on providing a seamless and thorough experience. Each stage, from the physical examination to lab tests and documentation, is designed to meet immigration requirements efficiently, ensuring all health concerns are addressed and reported accurately.
